KNOWLES TEAM | Q&A with Knowles’ New Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Chris Woods

What attracted you to a career in Quantity Surveying?
I initially wanted to become an accountant based upon my enjoyment of crunching numbers and being involved in the management of funds. However, I found a short while into my accountancy course that it wasn’t for me, and I desired something that had a financial element to it but also a practical side to complement it. I then discovered Quantity Surveying and knew after a short time researching the role, that it would be the profession for me.
What did you study at school/university and how did this prepare you for your professional career?
Following the completion of a HND in Quantity Surveying at University of Greenwich, I decided to pursue a BSc (Hons) Degree in Quantity Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University. During these studies, I developed an understanding of the fundamentals of surveying, the construction industry, and the QS role within it.
What are you most excited about for your Knowles career?
It would have to be the prospect of developing my skill set and growing as a Quantity Surveying professional. I am eager to see exciting projects that I am working on, including a new super-prime scheme in St Johns Wood, develop from demolition to practical completion and gain that valuable experience. Working with and obtaining knowledge from my senior colleagues is something that I am also very much looking forward to.
What skills do you feel are necessary as a quantity surveyor and what will you bring to projects?
Great communication skills, attention to detail, strong knowledge of building and the processes involved, good organisation, negotiation skills and commercial awareness to manage costs and make savings. I will bring an enthusiastic mindset, eagerness to learn and a positive working attitude to all the projects I am working on.
What are your currently working on at Knowles?
I am currently working on Knowles’ new super-prime scheme – an exciting demolition to fit out project with Knowles as Principal Contractor, located in one of the most prestigious roads in in St Johns Wood. I am also working on Ladbroke Hall, a very interesting project where we are currently commencing works for the installation of a double basement to the rear of the property.
